Face to Face: Strategies for Effective Consumer Health

Please join us for the fall 2007 continuing education event being held in Long Beach, California and Phoenix, Arizona.

Focus on the communication dynamics of providing health information to consumers. Interactive exercises and discussion will teach you to handle problem patrons and respond to ethical dilemmas in the health information setting. Self-care is accented as an important component for the consumer health information provider.
Michele Spatz, MS, Planetree Health Resource Center, The Dalles, OR -- Michele Spatz earned her master’s degree at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science, where she was inducted into Beta Phi Mu, the International Library Science Honor Society.
After receiving her degree Michele was the first librarian to earn tenure at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, working there as reference librarian and then branch library director. While there, she chaired a regional consumer health information project for central Illinois in the early 1980’s.
In the fall of 1991, she moved to The Dalles, Oregon, to establish the Planetree Health Resource Center, a community-based consumer health library, for Mid-Columbia Medical Center. She has served as the resource center’s director since it opened in June 1992.
Michele is active locally, regionally and nationally as a writer, teacher, committee member and consultant. She has served as past president of the Oregon Health Sciences Libraries Association as well as chair of the Consumer and Patient Health Information Section of the Medical Library Association. She is a current member of the National Network of Library’s of Medicine Pacific NW Region Consumer Health Advisory Panel and writes a monthly health column for a local newspaper. Nationally, Michele serves as the Medical Library Association’s allied representative to URAC’s Health Website Accreditation Committee.

Registration for the Phoenix class is now open to non-members as well as to members of MLGSCA. Registration for the Long Beach class will open to non-members on November 15th.

- Visitor Parking: Visitors have many options when it comes to parking on campus. Complimentary valet parking is available at the hospital's main entrance.
- Parking Garage Fees: A parking garage located near the main entrance (off 12th Street) provides two hours of free parking for visitors. A parking fee is assessed after the first two hours of complimentary parking—three hours is $3; four - eight hours is $4; eight or more hours is $8.
