This poster was contributed by Janet Bruman, MLS, Manager, Medical Library, Natividad Medical Center. Read the abstract online.

In library school, I’ve never heard of evidence-based medicine or even know what an EMR really is. It’s amazing how much I’ve learned coming to these conferences. I think for library school students who are seriously considering going into health science libraries, they should try to attend at least one MLA conference during their time in school. It’s a great opportunity to network with other veteran librarians in the field and maybe even find your next internship because often the directors from various health science libraries attend these conferences.

The Medical Library at the Natividad Medical Center is integrating access to current and consistent evidence-based information in the EMR. The access to this information is powered by Zynx, according to Janet Bruman, the Manager of the Medical Library, collaborating with EBSCO in providing the content. The evidence-based information is made available to all clinicians, including physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Janet showed me what this integration access might look like on a laptop. For example, when a clinician is looking at a EMR for a patient with pediatric asthma, an information button would appear that the clinician may click on that links him to Zynx Evidence database. Immediately, on the left-hand sidebar menu are the clustered subjects relating to pediatric asthma. The clinician may click on a “references” section and it will link to CINAHL. It a full text is available, there will be a PDF icon to open. If a PDF icon is not available, a clinician may find a link to request the article through ILL or send an email to Natividad’s Medical Library and request the staff to obtain the article from other sources.

There is further more exploration and testing in providing evidence-based information in the EMR. This poster has opened my eyes as to how this information can be provided to every user in the clinical workflow.
