JCAHO Visit at Phoenix Children’s Hospital

We are having our JCAHO survey this week and I am pleased to say that the JCAHO physician just visited the library.  Here is what he wanted to know:

Background:

My background, and whether I had an MLS degree?

Collection development questions:

How did I select books and journals?

How long did I keep them? And the electronic vs print question.

Also asked about the Brandon-Hill list and if any resource has replaced it?  I mentioned Doody’s and that the pediatric librarians maintain our own core list.

E-Resources:

Specifically asked if we had MDConsult and UpToDate?  He was very pleased that we had CINAHL for the nurses.

Access:

Was the library open to all hospital staff?

What type of access was available after hours?  He focused more on physical access but I also explained availability of 24/7 electronic access.

Coverage:

Who covered when I was away or on vacation (Thank you Maricopa Integrated Health System !)

Literature searches:

Do I have standardized forms for this (No, I don’t make library users fill out forms).

How does the process work?

He asked if I had any questions for him. We  had a discussion about the importance of having a professional librarian on site.  His view was that they are trying to set standards that all hospitals can meet, including the smaller ones, hence no on-site requirement.

He was here about 15 minutes.  I really did appreciate the visit and shared that with him.   Unfortunately I did not get his name.

I’m glad you posted this. Even though I’m not at a hospital, the general info/JC interest is helpful to know. I’m keeping this with my WASC, etc. accreditation docs. Thanks.
