On April 12th more than 1400 K-12 students from across Arizona descended on the Phoenix Convention Center for the annual Arizona Science and Engineering Fair.
Yamila El-Khayat, Outreach Librarian, University of Arizona Tucson and I used an iPad to show students how easy it was to search for easy to understand medical and health information using the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health Medlineplus website . We encouraged the students to use the website to help them with their future science projects and papers and to continue to use the website to find videos, cool tools, games, interaction between drugs and herbal supplements and health topics. We also let them know that Medlineplus was available in English as well as Spanish and other languages. We were also given access to the judging areas where posters and projects were on display and were able to target high school students interested in pursuing health care professions after graduation.
We hope to continue this outreach to Arizona’s students interested in the health sciences. and also made very important contacts with the Arizona Science Teachers Association a chapter of the National Science Teachers Association.
