Upon entering the SLIS program at San Jose State University I was a lost soul and had no real clue on where I would end up following graduation. During my two years in the program, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a public library, but even though I had a great experience I came to the conclusion that the public sphere was not where I wanted to end up. I knew that a more specialized field would be a better fit for me.
In the summer of 2011, I took a position at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego to broaden my horizons and it was through this position that initiated my interest in Medical Librarianship. Previously, I was very oblivious to the work that medical librarians do on a daily basis, but I have learned the importance of the work. I have been fortunate to work with two very skilled and informative librarians who have taught me the skills needed to succeed within the medical library. It has been a great experience, and I will continue to utilize all the skills and knowledge that I learned from this position in my future career.
The major aspect that has drawn me to the medical librarianship field is known that the work and research that I complete can have a positive effect on someone’s life. This drives me to work hard, and has sparked my interest in this field. Although, I do not have the science background, I feel that I can become an asset to the medical librarianship field. Hopefully, following graduation I will be able to obtain a full-time librarian position within a medical library.
