How Will You Cut The Cord? Fall 2009 MLA Webcast

MLA broadcasted their fall education webcast, “Cut The Cord: Connecting to our Mobile Users,” on November 18th. There were several site viewings in Southern California and Arizona available to MLGSCA members.
The webcast provided excellent case studies of uses of mobile technologies in both medical libraries and health care settings, included speakers from a variety of libraries, and the bibliographies submitted by speakers and videotaped presenters provide additional resources for exploring this emerging field.
Max Anderson (Technology Coordinator, NN/LM GMR, University of Illinois-Chicago) commenced the webcast with a short history of mobile technology. Emily Hurst (Instructional Services Librarian, University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio) and Megan von Isenburg (Associate Director, Information Services, Medical Center Library, Duke University) discussed projects involving e-Readers and how they are used in clinical settings. David Rothman (Manager, Medical Library, Community General Hospital, Syracuse, NY) and Bart Ragon (Associate Director, Library Technology Services & Development, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia-Charlottesville) compared medical applications on the iTouch, iPhone and Android phones.  Bart Ragon presented four ways of searching MEDLINE from a mobile device: PubMed on Tap; MEDLINE via Unbound Medicine; Pubget Mobile; and, Mobile PubMed.Â
Brian Briggman (System Architect, National Library of Medicine) explained how to design mobile device-combatible websites. Max Anderson culminated the webcast by providing government-level funding resources, partnerships and foundations to support initiatives involving mobile devices. Peruse the MLA Webcast Participant Manual to learn what other speakers said about connecting to our mobile users. The Participant’s Manual includes speaking information, webcast slides, and a bibliography of speaker favorites. To access the Participant’s Manual, use username mlaweb and password mlace13 on the Mobile Technologies Registered Sites webpage.Â
The webcast brought up many fruitful topics for discussion, and the MLGSCA blog would be a great place to continue these discussions. What did you find most interesting about the webcast? How will you expand your library’s offerings into the mobile world?

Arizona hosted two webcast sites–in both Phoenix and Tucson. We all enjoyed it, laughed at all the appropriate places, raised eyebrows quizzically (“hire a programmer” and learned a lot. Thanks, MLGSCA and MLA!
