Stephen Clancy, Reference Librarian at UC Irvine Science Library and MLGSCA member, created and taught the Spring CE course titled: “Point of Care EBM: Bedside Information Tools for Healthcare Practitionersâ€.
The course was attended by 14 people in Arizona at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona Health Science Library on April 13, 2009. In California, 32 people took the class at California State University, Northridge, Oviatt Library on April 23, 2009.
The course presented evidence-based online resources which synthesize medical information for use by health care professionals at the point-of-care. Through demonstration, hands-on group work, and patient-care scenarios, attendees learned to use and evaluate these resources.
Resources included: BMJ Point of Care, eMedicine Clinical Knowledge Base, Institutional Edition, Facts & Comparisons, MD Consult/FirstConsult, Micromedex/Micromedex Point of Care Interface, NeoFax, Stat!Ref, and UpToDate.
Stephen also used a few “case presentations†to demonstrate what kind of information healthcare practitioners might be looking for. This allowed Stephen to demonstrate search capabilities, good and bad, for each resource.
